East Petersburg, nestled in Lancaster County, boasts a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. The town was established in 1812 by Daniel and Polly Wolf, who purchased land from Daniel's brother, John, six years earlier. They created building lots, which were offered for sale on December 12, 1812, and the village grew despite the ongoing War of 1812. Initially, the area was informally known as "Heckel Stettle," a German term meaning "hemp processing settlement," reflecting the local hemp or flax processing industry. The name "Petersburg" was later adopted in honor of the original property owner, Peter Gotshall. To distinguish it from another Petersburg in Pennsylvania, "East" was added, resulting in the name East Petersburg. In the late 1940s, the town faced a typhoid epidemic due to contaminated water sources. This health crisis led to the incorporation of East Petersburg as a borough on December 20, 1946, to establish a municipal water system. Today, East Petersburg is a thriving community that honors its heritage while embracing modern developments.​
