History of Myerstown
In the early 1730s, German immigrants settled in the area now known as Myerstown. Initially called Herclerode after the first landowner, Valentine Herclerode, the town's name evolved over time. Isaac Meier, who married Herclerode's daughter Catherine, purchased the home and plantation, laying out the town's streets in 1768. After Meier's untimely death in 1770, the town gradually became known as Meier-Town, eventually adopting the English spelling, Myerstown. The town flourished with the construction of the Union Canal in the 1820s, which spurred the development of factories, hotels, and stores. The arrival of the Lebanon Valley Railroad in the 1850s further contributed to Myerstown's prosperity.
